A double-A game between the Portland Sea Dogs and Binghamton Rumble Ponies exploded into a full-scale brawl after a batter was hit by a pitch.
The incident occurred in the third inning and started when Rumble Ponies starter Marcel Renteria hit Sea Dogs DH Tyreque Reed with the bases loaded, walking in a run.
Reed started making his way to first base but then turned towards the mound and connected a hard punch with Renteria’s head. It’s unclear if any words were exchanged before the brawl began.
After Reed’s punch, the benches and dugouts cleared and fists were thrown by people on both sides. Renteria remained down on the field and left with an injury while Reed and Rumble Ponies third baseman Brett Batty were ejected by the umpires.
The Sea Dogs went on to win the game 12-5.
